Why “The Town”?
“The Town” is a long-standing nickname for Oakland, California.
The Town Works began with a simple observation here: many people have useful skills, many neighbors need those skills, and a surprising amount of local commerce already happens outside formal marketplaces.
People find each other through recommendations, neighborhood groups, churches, schools, community organizations, social media, flyers, family networks, and ordinary conversation. Those systems can be excellent at discovery and human trust. They are much weaker at providing the infrastructure that comes after two people decide to work together.
Town Works is meant to fill that gap. We are building tools for:
- identity and account verification
- clear records of work agreements
- secure payment processing
- transaction history
- portable reputation and recommendations
- dispute resolution
- community-level mechanisms for helping with small losses
- eventually, appropriate third-party insurance for risks that require it
The initial focus is Oakland and nearby communities, with the broader goal of creating infrastructure that any community could use.
What Town Works is responsible for
Town Works provides technology and administrative services that help participants arrange and document transactions. Unless Town Works explicitly states otherwise for a particular service:
- the person providing the work is an independent provider;
- the customer and provider decide the scope, timing, and price of the work;
- Town Works does not employ the provider;
- Town Works does not supervise or direct how the provider performs the work;
- Town Works is not the seller of services offered by participants;
- Town Works does not guarantee the qualifications, licensing, safety, legality, or quality of every service offered through the platform.
Certain activities may require professional licenses, permits, insurance, registrations, food-handling authorization, business licenses, or other legal requirements. Providers are responsible for understanding and complying with requirements that apply to their work.
Town Works may restrict activities that are unsafe, unlawful, prohibited by our payment providers, or inconsistent with our community standards — see acceptable use.
